Meteora is one of the most remarkable monuments of the world, protected by UNESCO. When approaching Kalambaka you can see stiff cliffs rising up out of nowhere. When you get closer you see that on top of these rocks monasteries are built.
The rocks are natural sandstone towers that rose up through landslides. Because of erosion, at the time that this area was still an inland sea, the Meteora was formed. Around the year 985 the first hermits retired back on the inaccessible rocks. They created their habitat here and only occasionally went down. It is not known how they climbed the cliffs, perhaps they used kites to hook hooks and rope ladders.
In the mid-14th century the first monasteries on the peaks arose. The completion of some monasteries took more than 200 years. With nets on ropes and wooden ladders up to 40 meters long the monks transported goods and people to the top.
Of the 24 monasteries most are in decline. However, there are six monasteries still inhabited and accessible to visitors. A must-see during your trip through Greece!
