Ioannina is a lively town on the mainland next to Lake Pamvotis at an altitude of approximately 500 meters. The city has had a university since 1965 (one of the reasons it is lively) and has more than 100,000 inhabitants.
Ioannina is a modern city, but also beautiful and picturesque. The city actually consists of two parts, one part with, among other things, the old bazaar, the town hall and the archaeological museum. The other part consists of the citadel. An old fortress with narrow streets lined filled with shops and the Ali Pasha Mosque (now the Municipal Museum), the Jewish Synagogue and the Turkish Library surrounded by walls
In the lake is an island, Nisos Ioanninon, with important Byzantine monasteries. At the lakeside you will find many tavernas and terraces. You can sail across the lake with a boat.
In the vicinity of Ioannina you will find Perama, with the largest cave system in Greece. The beautiful Zagoria villages, the Vikos gorge and the traditional village of Metsovo higher in the mountains are also worth a visit. Just west of the city is the archaeological highlight of this region, Dodoni. Dodoni has a well-preserved amphitheater.
