Kefalonia belongs to the Ionian Islands and has a surface area of ??approximately 782 km2. The fertile island of Kefalonia is a quiet island. Fiskardo is located in the north of the island and is the only place where the most beautiful Venetian houses withstood the big earthquake of 1953. This village is the most picturesque village of the island. The village of Assos is also worth visiting. This village is amphitheatrically built and one of the prettiest on the island. South of Assos is one of the most famous beaches of Greece, Myrtos Beach. It is a beautiful white sand-gravel beach with a deep blue sea at the foot of a green steep slope. Kefalonia was the location to shoot the movie Captains Corelli's Mandolin with Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz.
The most famous spot on Kefalonia is the underground lake of Melissani. You sail on a small boat into the cave where is the is located. Once the underground lake was completely underground. During the earthquake of 1953 a part of the roof collapsed. The lake water comes from the sea. At Katavothres thousands of gallons of seawater flow daily into a crack in the earth, 17 kilometers later the water pops up in the lake of Melissani.
Also the big seaturtles Carreta Carreta attract many visitors.
According to many Fiskardo is the most beautiful village of Kefalonia. One find a lot of restaurants and shops.
Melissani lake is located in an underground cave. Some time ago the 'roof' collapsed so nowadays the sun shines on the water.
