Zakynthos is, with a surface area of ??406 km2, the largest island of the Ionian Islands after Corfu and Cephalonia. It lies in the south of the Ionian Sea and is also known as Zante. Zakynthos is known for its rugged coast, high cliffs with in between unreachable, deserted beaches. One of these beaches is the famous 'Shipwreck Beach'. This is the place where most pictures of Zakynthos are taken. The west side of the island consists of chalky rock. By the erosion of the water caves and large underground holes are formed here.
Besides the island has a beautiful green scenery, clear blue sea, some old villages and not to forget the impressive Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. These can mainly be found from mid-May to late August on the South side of the island.
Zakynthos is a popular island among tourists and if you want to explore the real Greece it's better to avoid places like Laganas and Argassi.
Shipwreck Beach is a picturesque bay surrounded by limestone rocks and cliffs. In this bay a ship ran aground.
Hundreds of Caretta-Caretta turtles come near Laganas from mid-May to late August to lay their eggs.
Gerekas is a beautiful sandy beach on the eastern side of the island. The beach runs down very gradually and one finds many protected turtle nests here.
