The island of Syros, with a surface of ??86 km2, is a stranger in the midst of the Cyclades. All other islands are characterized by white cubic houses, but the capital of Syros (Ermoupolis) has stately mansions in neo-classical and Venetian style. Syros has 20,000 inhabitants and it's town is the capital of the Cyclades. Entering this chic capital is very impressive. The city is built on two hills and runs to the sea. At the top of the hills are two churches, one Orthodox and one Roman Catholic.
The heart of Ermoupolis is Miaoulis Square. On this square one finds the impressive town hall with the more than 150 year old Apollon theater nearby. Ermoupolis has a number of nice restaurants and bars.
The island is a bit hilly and quite arid, it is not nearly as touristy as the surrounding islands. Because Syros is so different, it complements your islandhopping journey through the Cyclades.
The absolute highlight is Ano Syros. The narrow streets form the way to the Roman Catholic church. You will find many picturesque old houses and a number of gigantic bougainvillas. Ano Syros gives you a beautiful view over Ermoupolis.
The best beaches on the island can be found at Kini and Galissas.
