Nafplion

Nafplion is a charming harbor town with narrow streets connected by stairs around the Platía Syntagmatos square,. This beautiful cobblestone square has cafes and tavernas for a snack and drink. The marble streets make Nafplion the most elegant city in Greece. Above Nafplion the Palamidi castle dominates the hill, after a climb of 857 steps you arrive and have a magnificent view.

In front of Nafplion, in the water, one finds the island fortress Bourzi which is a Venetian fortress. It's easy to spot from the harbor promenade of Nafplion, but even better from the Palamidi castle up on the hill.

The charm of Nafplion and its strategic location to visit Epidaurus and Mycenae made Nafplion an important tourist center. Epidaurus is the best preserved amphitheater of Greece and Mycenae attracts many visitors because of its lion gate. Go to visit the sites early so you are ahead of the visitors that come by bus from Athens.
