Skopelos has a surface area of approximately 96 km2 and is located between Skiathos and Alonissos. Skopelos is a green, mountainous island with a rugged coastline with steep cliffs and bays with some beautiful beaches surrounded by pine trees and clear blue water. There are up to 8 million pine trees on this island. This was undoubtedly the reason to shoot the majority of the movie Mama Mia (2007) with Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep on this island. Make sure to visit the church on the rock by the water where the wedding scene was recorded.
The island is also known for its many hiking trails in the beautiful countryside and the many churches and monasteries.
Skopelos Town consists of traditional white houses with orange roofs that are built up against a mountain. The center is very charming and lively. Everywhere there are little old churches and you will find cozy squares. It's easy to get lost while scrambling up the hill through the narrow streets. The reward is a magnificent view over the bay. From the city there are caiques to the beautiful, but difficult to reach, beach of Glisteri.
