Alonissos has a surface area of about 60 km2 and is the quietest island of the Sporads. Again, there is a green hilly landscape with vast pine forests, grapevines and olive groves. The coastline of Alonissos is rugged with on the westside many steep cliffs and on the eastside many bays with pebble beaches.
There's a special atmosphere on the island that 'caught' us straight away. Secluded beaches, scenic fishing villages, quiet people and the incredible beautiful color of the sea known as the cleanest in the Aegean contribute to this feeling.
The most important places on the island are Patitiri (where the ferry arrives and where one find the only ATM) and Chora (also called Liadromia), the ancient capital. Chora is completely car-free and has several tavernas. Visit the Castro, the old school and the various village churches. Check out the Byzantine wall at the edge of the village.
Around Alonissos you find the largest National Marine Park of Europe. You'll find Monk Seals and sometimes dolphins. There are also possiblities to dive here. The main visitors of the island are nature lovers and hikers.
