Skiathos belongs to the Sporades and has a surface area of approximately 61 km2. It is a green and hilly island, with vast pine forests and olive groves. The coast is rocky and rugged and on the south and southeast coast you will find beautiful bays with beautiful sandy beaches.
From Skiathos town there is a very regular bus service which stops at nearly every beach on the southeast side. The best known and most visited beach is Koukounaries. It is labeled as one of the finest in Greece, consisting of golden sand and surrounded by pine trees.
The capital, Skiathos town is a picturesque place with a number of narrow streets full of boutique shops. It is very cozy and you can relax on one of the terraces at the harbor.
Furthermore, you can find the islandbeach of Tsougria (by boat from Skiathos Town), the blue cave on the east side of the island, the monasteries of Evangelistria and Kounistra and Lalaria Beach with cliffs and white pebbles.
Skiathos got a big publicity a few years ago when they were filming the blockbuster "Mama Mia". The biggest part of this movie is shot on Skopelos. Skiathos is much more touristy than Skopelos and Alonissos. This is mainly due to the presence of an airport.
