Hydra is a rocky island with a surface area of approximately 52 km2. It belongs to the Saronic islands and in recent years it has become a cosmopolitan, artistic center. Many artists, painters and musicians have settled here for a long time.
The main town is scenic with fortifications in the harbor, an 18th century monastery, houses with red roof tiles and beautiful neo-classical mansions. It is located in a sheltered bay.
There are no cars on Hydra, but transport is done by horse-drawn carriage, donkey or boat. Therefore the quietness increases the further you leave Hydra-Town behind. Most people visit the monasteries , churches and beaches on foot or take a taxi boat or caique.
