Hydra is a rocky island with a surface area of approximately 52 km2. It belongs to the Saronic islands and in recent years it has become a cosmopolitan, artistic center. Many artists, painters and musicians have settled here for any length of time.
The main town is scenic with fortifications in the harbor, an 18th century monastery, houses with red roof tiles and beautiful neo-classical mansions. It is located in a sheltered bay.
There are no cars on Hydra, but transport is done by horse-drawn carriage, donkey or boat. Therefore the quietness increases the further you leave Hydra-Town behind. Most people visit the monasteries , churches and beaches on foot or take a taxi boat or caique.
