Nisyros is a small, round volcanic island with a surface area of approximately 41 km2. There are more than 1500 permanent residents and most live in the port town of Mandraki. Mandraki is a picturesque village with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. On top of the hill is a small Venetian fort. Compared with, for example Kos and Rhodes, Nisyros is an oasis of tranquility, it only gets busy during the day. There are daily excursions from Kos to Nisyros for the ones willing to visit the crater of the volcano.
The volcano is not active but still alive. In many places vapors rise up from the ground and the smell of sulfur is very strong. You can freely walk between these places and it is a special experience. When the day trippers return to their resort on another island around half past four the peace returns and the island is just for you, a few other tourists and the locals.
