Frangokastello

Frangokastello is a small, quiet, long drawn out village on the Southwest side of Crete. It is known for its castle which dates from 1371 and was primarily used to protect the inhabitants against pirates. Frangokastello has no village-centre, but the accommodations and restaurants are spread out. Frangokastello is ideal for those looking for a quiet getaway. It has beautiful sandy beaches where the water runs quietly. From Frangokastello one can discover the west side of the island. Make sure to visit the old town of Rethymnon, the Preveli monastery and beach and walk through the Imbros gorge. Another interesting walk is the hike to Loutro. This village can only be reached by boat or on foot.
