During this three-week tour you visit four quiet places on Crete. From these villages you can perfecty explore the largest island of Greece. You begin your trip on the northeast side of the island, in the quiet fishing village of Mochlos. Then you travel to the south, and stay in the charming village of Mirtos. From these two villages you can visit Knossos, palm beach Vai and the Lassithi Plateau. Then you travel to two places on the South West side of the island. Frangokastelloi and Sougia are authentic places again where there is little tourism. From those places you can discover the West side of the island. Day 1

Day 1: Arrival at Crete

Upon arrival at Heraklion Airport there is someone waiting for you with a sign with your name on it to take you to your rental car. The drive to Mochlos will take you about 1,5 hours.

Day 2, 3, 4 & 5

Day 2, 3, 4 & 5: at leisure in Mochlos on Crete

Mochlos is a small typical Greek fishing village on the north side of the island between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. It is a quiet place with white houses, blue shutters, brightly colored bougainvilleas and a small promenade with a few restaurants. It is very cozy and you feel the Cretan hospitality. From Mochlos you can easily visit the east side of the island. Think about visiting the Lassithi plateau, the beaches of Vai, the Moni Toplou Monastery and many hiking possiblities. Jour 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 : temps libre à Mirtos, Crète

Mirtos est un sympathique petit village sur la côte sud de la Crète. Vous y trouverez un site de la vraie Grèce car non inondé par les touristes. De Mirtos, vous pourrez découvrir le côté est de l’île. Facile d’accès en voiture, le palmbeach de Vai, la grotte de Zeus sur le Plateau de Lassithi, Knossos, l’ile de Spinalonga la ville d’ Agios Nikolaos l’île inhabitée de Chrissi et un peu plus loin les grottes de Matala. L’arrière-pays offre de nombreuses possibilités pour la randonnée, superbes gorges et nombreux villages où le temps semble s’arrêter et les vieilles dames en noir qui dominent dans les rues. Day 12

Day 12: Journey Mirtos - Frangokastello

The drive from Mirtos to Frangokastello will take you about 4 hours. Take it easy and make some stops. You could for example visit the caves of the hippie town of Matala, see the excavations of Phaistos and make a short break at the healing springs of Spili.

Day 13, 14, 15 & 16

Day 13, 14, 15 & 16: at leisure in Frangokastello on Crete

Frangokastello is a small, quiet, long drawn out village on the Southwest side of Crete. It is known for its castle which dates from 1371 and was primarily used to protect the inhabitants against pirates. Frangokastello is ideal for those looking for a quiet getaway. It has beautiful sandy beaches where the water runs quietly. From Frangokastello one can discover the west side of the island. Make sure to visit the old town of Rethymnon, the Preveli monastery and beach and walk through the Imbros gorge. Another interesting walk is the hike to Loutro. Day 17

Day 17: Frangokastello - Sougia

There are two ways to go to Sougia from Frangokastello. You can go by boat from Chora Sfakion to Sougia (please check whether it will sail, we advice you to check this one day in advance) or drive in about 3 hours to Sougia via Chania.

Day 18, 19, 20 & 21

Day 18, 19, 20 & 21: at leisure in Sougia, Crete

Sougia is a small, cozy, picturesque village on the southwest side of Crete. It has about 150 inhabitants and several tavernas on the boulevard next to the large pebble beach. Sougia has a few cafes and bars, but do not expect a lot of nightlife (if any). It is ideal for those seeking peace and those who still want to enjoy the real Greece. There are many hiking trails in the area and it is close to the famous Samaria Gorge (the longest gorge in Europe). Learn more about Sougia.

Car rental

As the public transport at Crete is not too good, we only offer this trip including a car.

Flights

As flight rates differ per day, we offer the trips excluding flights. There are flights from €260, - per person, for those flights availability is limited. In general, the sooner you book, the cheaper the flight. We can help you to search for a suitable flight.

Accommodation

You can choose different type and class of accommodations with us. The hotels include breakfast and the studio's or apartments are mostly without breakfast. The hotels we divided into three different classes:

  • 2 balls Often small scale hotels with simple but decent rooms with private bathroom and toilet.
  • three balls Comfortable hotels with more facilities, often with pool. The rooms are also better.
  • four balls Luxury hotels with lots of facilities or a particularly stylish accommodation .

The studio's or apartments without breakfast we divide into two classes:

  • 2 balls Often small complexes with simple studio's or apartments with a simple own kitchenette.
  • 3 balls Often small complexes with comfortable studio's or apartments with a comfortable private kitchenette.

Be sure where you stay

Because we are very flexible, one can depart any day and one can make all kind of changes to our trips, it's impossible to check availability of accommodations in advance. We therefore assume the accommodations mentioned in the quotation are available. If something turns out to be fully booked at the time of booking, we will come up with a similar alternative, but you can still cancel the trip free of charge. So, before the final booking you will know where you will be staying.
